About the DistrictThe Hobart Exempted Village School District is one of the oldest continuously independent school districts in Proctor County, and the only one that does not answer to the Proctor County Board of Education. What "Exempted" MeansUnder Ohio law, an exempted village school district operates independently of the county board of education. We elect our own board, levy our own taxes, hire our own superintendent, and set our own curriculum. Ohio stopped creating exempted village districts in 1954. Hobart was already one. Once a district gives up this status, it cannot be restored. Our IndependenceThe State of Ohio has recommended consolidation with neighboring districts on several occasions. Each time, the Board of Education has declined. The district's position on this matter has not changed. Facts
